Scooty for ₹1 Lakh, VIP Number for ₹14 Lakh: Himachal Man’s Passion Grabs Headlines
Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh), June 20:
In a story that has captured both curiosity and admiration, Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, made news by spending ₹14 lakh on a VIP vehicle registration number—HP21C-0001—for his scooter, which itself is worth just ₹1 lakh.
The number was secured through an online auction held by the Himachal Pradesh Transport Department. Interestingly, the bidding war was between just two participants—Kumar and another bidder from Baddi in Solan district, who offered ₹13.5 lakh. Kumar outbid him by ₹50,000, making this possibly the most expensive number ever assigned to a two-wheeler in the state.
All proceeds from the auction have gone directly into the state government’s treasury, offering a significant boost in revenue without any cost incurred by the administration.
Sanjeev Kumar explained that his purchase was fueled by passion, not prestige.
“There’s no price tag on passion. When you want something extraordinary, you don’t look at the cost,” he said.
His son, Dinesh Kumar, confirmed that the decision to get the unique number was purely personal.
“We applied online. Another individual was also in the race, but we were allotted the number through the bidding process,” he added.
The incident has generated buzz on social media, where users are divided—some praising Kumar’s enthusiasm for unique identifiers, while others question the extravagance. Yet, many agree that the transparent online auction system has given citizens a fair and open chance to claim their desired numbers.
The episode marks not only a record-breaking moment in Himachal’s vehicle registration history but also highlights a growing trend of personalization in Indian road culture.
