Doctor Rescues TB Patient from the Clutches of Superstition

Burla, Sambalpur | May 13, 2025:
In an inspiring example of dedication and compassion, **Dr. Sanjeeb Kumar Mishra**, Assistant Professor at VIMSAR, Burla, has successfully intervened to help a tuberculosis (TB) patient overcome fear and superstition to seek proper medical care.

The patient, **Jyotsna Barla**, had a traumatic history with TB—having lost her father to the disease five years ago, and witnessing several other villagers fall ill. Diagnosed with TB herself three years ago, Jyotsna was initially reluctant to undergo treatment. Only after intensive counseling by the local Community Health Centre (CHC) Medical Officer and Senior Treatment Supervisor did she begin and reportedly complete the course of medication at the time.

However, lingering misconceptions and community stigma persisted.

Recently, acting on a communication from an international health organization, **Dr. Mishra personally visited Jyotsna’s home on Sunday**. Engaging with her family and neighbors, he addressed deep-rooted superstitions surrounding TB and explained the importance of consistent, evidence-based treatment. After a detailed clinical assessment, Jyotsna was provisionally diagnosed again and referred for a confirmatory sputum examination.

Reassured by Dr. Mishra’s efforts and support, the family agreed to seek institutional care. Jyotsna was transported to VIMSAR Hospital today with the assistance of the 108 ambulance service. She has since been **admitted to the Tuberculosis Ward for comprehensive evaluation and management**.

Dr. Mishra emphasized that while the government offers **free diagnostics, medicines, nutrition kits**, and widespread awareness campaigns through ASHA workers, **ignorance and social stigma continue to hinder TB eradication efforts**. He urged communities to trust medical science and fully utilize government-supported health schemes.

> “Awareness, empathy, and timely intervention can save lives. It’s high time we rise above myths and embrace modern medicine,” Dr. Mishra stated.

This case stands as a **beacon of hope and a call to action**—that no patient should suffer in silence or neglect due to superstition. With coordinated efforts, a **TB-free future is within reach
