Government’s Freebies Are Not in the Interest of the Nation, Say Senior Citizens

Cuttack, 25/11
In a significant gathering that highlighted the concerns of senior citizens, a meeting organized by the Cuttack “Maha Nagar Baristha Nagarik Mahasabha” at the Panda Medical Hall vehemently criticized the current trend of political parties offering freebies to attract voters. The event, presided over by Dr. Krupasindhu Panda, brought to light the potentially damaging effects of these practices on the nation’s economy and social structure.

Professor Baishnab Samal, a keynote speaker at the event, elaborated on the ill effects of these freebies. He argued that political parties are offering various incentives such as free electricity, water, and schemes like Kalia and Suvadra without consulting experts or assessing their long-term economic and social implications. “These measures are counterproductive and ultimately decelerate the economy,” Professor Samal emphasized. The discussion also delved into the contentious issue of reservation policies. Initially introduced for a period of 10 years, these policies have been repeatedly extended by politicians seeking electoral advantages, despite their potential to create social divisions and hazards. Participants warned that extending reservation policies indefinitely could lead to a divisive society based on caste lines, which they described as “suicidal” for national progress.

Dr. Sunil Bose and Engineer Dhirendra Mishra, both senior members of the forum, contributed to the discussion by highlighting how these freebies and reservation policies are fostering a culture where people earn without labor. This, they argued, is disrupting the labor market and undermining the work ethic essential for economic growth.

The meeting was managed by General Secretary Bishnu Mohan Samant, who ensured a structured and productive discussion. Joint Secretary Barada Prasanna Das offered the customary vote of thanks to conclude the event.                                                           Key Points from the Meeting:
Economic Impact: The provision of free services and goods by governments was criticized for being economically burdensome and counterproductive.
Lack of Expert Consultation: Politicians were accused of implementing these policies without consulting experts or considering their long-term impact.
Reservation Policies: The indefinite extension of reservation policies was seen as socially hazardous and detrimental to national unity.
Labor Market Disruption: The culture of earning without labor was identified as a significant issue affecting the labor market.
Call for Change: Participants urged that this trend be quashed in the greater interest of the nation to ensure sustainable economic growth and social harmony.
The consensus among the attendees was clear: these political tactics must be reassessed and reformed to prioritize the nation’s long-term well-being over short-term electoral gains.

In conclusion, the meeting underscored the need for a more responsible and sustainable approach to governance, one that prioritizes economic stability and social cohesion over populist measures designed to attract voters
