Memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister: Erect a Memory Structure at Idgah Grounds

CUTTACK: A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister during her recent visit to Cuttack, urging the government to erect a memory structure at the Idgah Grounds, a historic site that played a pivotal role in Odisha’s struggle for recognition as a separate state based on language.

The Idgah Grounds, where the Utkal Sammilani organized a successful meeting in 1903 under the leadership of Kulabrudh Madhusudan, is considered a sacred place for all Odias. The meeting marked the beginning of a 33-year-long struggle that ultimately led to Odisha becoming the first state in the country to be recognized based on language.

Despite its significance, the site has been neglected, with only a pillar of memory standing as a testament to the historic event. The memorandum, presented by Barada Prasanna Das, President of the Thinkers’ Club, along with Lalatendu Badu, President of the BJP party, Cuttack chapter, and other dignitaries, highlighted the importance of recognizing the site’s historical significance.

Das explained the matter to the Deputy Chief Minister, providing necessary data and context. The Minister, in response, promised to take immediate steps to address the issue and erect a memory structure at the Idgah Grounds.

The move is seen as a long-overdue recognition of the site’s importance in Odisha’s history and a tribute to the struggles of the people who fought for the state’s recognition.
