World Human Rights Day Observed by CHRC, Odisha: 50 Human Rights Defenders Felicitated

Bhubaneswar, Dec 10:
The Citizens Human Rights Clinic (CHRC), Odisha, in collaboration with Sabitri Devi Charitable Trust, Jehoovah Group of Companies, Indo TV, and Purbasha Tarini Maa Socio-Economic Developmental Society, observed World Human Rights Day 2025 with dignity and commitment at the Conference Hall of the Indian Red Cross Society, Bhubaneswar.

The programme, organised to enhance public awareness and engagement on human rights issues, was held under the distinguished presidentship of Dr. Gopabandhu Mallick, former Additional DGP of Odisha Police and Chairman of CHRC. In his address, Dr. Mallick stressed the collective responsibility of society in upholding human dignity, equality, and justice.

He was joined by core members of CHRC, including Nrusingha Nath Nanda, National Convenor; Basanta Kumar Dash, Vice-President; novelist Prof. Rashmi Roul; Women’s Wing Secretary Banashree Mohapatra; and Adv. Pratap Keshari Das, who played key roles in the programme’s execution.


Dignitaries Graced the Event

The ceremony witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests:

  • Dr. Rabinarayan Senapati, IAS (Retd) – former Development Commissioner, Govt. of Odisha (Chief Guest)

  • Goutama Buddha Das – Hon’ble MLA, Bhograi (Special Guest)

  • Dr. Pabitra Mohan Samantaray – Editor-in-Chief, Kalinga Chronicles–Paryabekhyak (Chief Speaker)

  • Prof. Niranjan Barik – former Professor of Political Science, Ravenshaw University (Eminent Guest)

Their deliberations added depth to the event, addressing both national and international human rights challenges.


Key Addresses on Rights, Responsibilities & Violations

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Rabinarayan Senapati highlighted that although democratic nations are constitutionally mandated to protect human rights, violations often stem from the misuse of authority by individuals. He urged victims to seek justice through NHRC and SHRC mechanisms and praised CHRC for its proactive role across Odisha.

Dr. Pabitra Mohan Samantaray expressed grave concern over increasing threats to journalists worldwide, stating that attacks on media are direct attacks on democracy.

Prof. Niranjan Barik and Prof. Rashmi Roul commended CHRC’s persistent advocacy for fairness, equality, and transparency, establishing it as a national voice for human dignity.


Speakers Addressed Core Human Rights Concerns

Prominent speakers who enriched the discussion included:

Pandit Gokul Bihari Mohapatra, Sulagna Sucharita, Sushanta Rout, Adv. Pratap Keshari Das, Biswakeshan Behera, Kabi Sukumar Das, Swarup Kumar Basa, Aswini Kumar Das, Bijay Kumar Nayak, Sarat Chandra Behera, and Jagabandhu Mallick.

They highlighted critical issues such as cultural rights, social justice, constitutional safeguards, and the urgent need for public participation in defending democratic principles.


50 Human Rights Defenders Felicitated

In recognition of their unwavering service, CHRC honoured 50 eminent Human Rights Defenders who have been actively contributing towards justice, empowerment of the marginalized, and protection of democratic rights.


Closing Ceremony

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Nrusingha Nath Nanda, National Convenor of CHRC. He expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, partners, and participants for making the World Human Rights Day celebration impactful.

Mr. Nanda reaffirmed CHRC’s mission to strengthen human rights education, advocate for justice, and empower vulnerable communities across Odisha.
